As things stand
- Carnival (year two) is over. Still no King Oberon.
- Much tension in the city and among noble houses
- Bleys and Eric are running things, but fighting.
- Caine and Gerard at sea trying to maintain order in Golden Circle
- Treaties are fraying because the Circle senses a power vacuum and are getting uppity.
- Shipping is disrupted. Ships vanishing attributed to sea monsters, piracy & freak storms.
- ShadowAidran is probably responsible for piracy, trying to carve out their own niche and rival Amber.
- Eric has convinced Julian to hang out in Arden.
- Benedict has been gone 20+ years.
- Things are tense between Rebma and Amber.
- Duels are frequent and many between Bleys and Eric supporters are murders thinly guised as duels.
- The lights went out in Amber; all of them, everywhere. Unearthly piping and rats ensued.
Arryl & Evey
- catching up. Evey starts with the easy topic of their being someone who has a basilisk because the statues in the park didn’t start as statues. She thinks she can reverse the affect, but they might already be dead (shock).
Then they talk about the night Arryl found Evey in the carriage… Evey gets brave and launches into the full discourse about the ‘ward stone’, the fact that it’s broken, she has no idea how to fix something of that magnitude, and we (collectively) are in a whole lot of trouble. Story about how Brand rescued her and the place where the palace and the mountain were not, though she knows that she should have been beneath both.
Arryl gives Evey a Weir guard -just in case she gets up to something else- because this is the 2nd time Evey’s gotten herself into trouble. ‘Yes, but the first time it didn’t go so badly for me, not sure why the power was so adverse this time.’ Evey explains…
“I was talking about Wesson’s Pub.” “Oh.” Whoops.
O'Donovan & Ambrose
with Dashif and Major, facing wingless, fire breathing dragon The dragon is chained and an attempt to talk with it is met with growls. Not a talking, treasure hoarding dragon.
Dashif goes in to kill the dragon, so everyone else charges too. The major and Dashif are badly injured, but the dragon dies.
The Well – Ambrose takes a sample of the water and then they move away from the Well. Dashif drinks the water and looks healed, but very spacey. Everyone else is reluctant to follow suit. But when O’Donovan tries one more magically related thing, he goes down and Ambrose makes the decision that they are all having a drink. They heal, and feel a whole lot better,… but the visions are hellish.
• Fleet of black ships with a silver rose embellished on the sails. Some ships are manned by red hairy men, others by purple hairy men. Lots and Lots of them. The black ships are engaged in a naval battle with Amber’s navy. • Ripple… as in water, transforms into a silver rose. • Sees Garnath on fire, and a fire raging in Arden. • War, more purple and red men, very close to home. • Lavish party at the palace… hears Greensleeves and everything goes black – can smell blood. • Trees in Arden, black and twisted. • A thunder of flapping wings becomes wyverns. Lots of them. • Wall of lightning. • A dagger through a card, spinning as it falls. • The Tower (social club) is destroyed by lightning. • Battle on the steps of Rebma. Men on horses. • A young man Amberlash and O’Donovan do not recognize is bandaged around the waist. • Corwin’s tomb • Brand regards a painting of the Well…. Turns and looks at them.
Everything goes white, as if there’s a flare, and they briefly see the Unicorn.
They recover, but feel very hung over.
Dashif goes to take over… and there is a “popular uprising” and Amber, gracious neighbor that she is, helps to restore order.
Back in Amber…
News quickly spreads about the big power shake up in the Golden Circle: Aidan has suffered a coup, but peace has been restored and Deirdre’s person is now on the throne. Politically, the Aidan “problem” is at least temporarily fixed.
Juliana Pinegar drinks with Sean O'Donovan, again, on a night when PhillipPinegar is out. Sean relates a vision he had of Phillip in Shadow Aidran, of what Phillip did there. Juliana won't even hear about it until she's smashed. Sean shares other details of the trip with Juliana, including what happened at the well and the fact that Fiotann Sabatini and AmbassadorOrlando were part of the 'solution'.
Juliana then invites Dr. Sabatini to tea to discuss the trip in more detail. Juliana is agressive and Sabatini is somewhat evasive, but certainly gives her a few crumbs. He lets drop that there is a military operation taking place shortly - Juliana invites Janet up to stay at the Manor House, as always, hoping to keep her best friend out of harms way.
Juliana shares her displeasure with the way the Aidran situation was handled with both Prince Eric and Princess Deirdre.
Arryl &Evey
- have a meeting with Eric… much to Evey’s distress. There is a discussion about the ‘ward stone’ (Pattern) and the damage it has sustained. The face of it is scarred, and the damage has ‘calcified’, hardened but not spread. She recounts, again, the place where Kolvir and the palace are gone. Arryl reminds her that she was not alone and, yes, Prince Brand was there, though Evey doesn’t know if he was there before she was, or if her arrival brought him.
Evey doesn’t know how it might be fixed, but she thinks it will take the efforts of more than one person. Eric makes her promise she won’t put her fingers in the Pattern again.
Back at home, Evey sends a return note to Brand, thanking him for his assistance and his presence was a ‘lovely surprise in the midst of an unexpected, and potentially unfortunate event.’
In the meanwhile…
The police have finished cleaning house and new (outside) people have been hired.
O’Donovan and Ambrose are back in Amber. Talk of bad stuff visions.
Brand paints lovely paintings.
The gratitude of the trading houses (for the restoration of peace and safe trade) is made clear and they think O’Donovan should be promoted to Admiral. HouseDiaz leads this campaign. O'Donovan protests this (due to another vision). Juliana lets Eric in on the gossip, and O'Donovan's recluctance, and why O'Donovan is reluctant.
Madeline - the signet ring in question is in the hands of the Gladiator. Popular consent has it that ‘they’ need to kill the Gladiator. Eric agrees.
Combat types… Operation outside the city limits (south of Amber) - Eric is removing the Gladiator, who has a mansion (fortified keep) on the coast. This sill be a joint (but select) military effort.
O’Donovan, Madeline, Forester, Arryl, Juliann will be there w/ Eric, Hawk, and Phillip is along too.
O’Donovan, “Any last acts as Commodore?” –Stormy.
They suspect significant underground facilities, which will be handled by Weir. O’Donovan, Madeline and others coming by sea (caves in coast). Others will storm the castle itself and secure the parimeter so no one escapes. Ambrose to undo the wards.
No arrests necessary.
Wards crash. Special effects (fog) which messes up Reggie’s view. Julian charges and crashes the doors. Weir follow with Eric.
Lots and lots of guards… some have silver and Hawk goes after them to protect the Weir, who protect him from the ones not armed with silver.
Battle ensues. Massive flood from tower as Ambrose takes out a mage.
O’Donovan, Madeline & co hear reptilian hissing and growling and find ‘dire crocodiles’ which exhale green smoke (chlorine gas).
“I have armor.” – O’Donovan “Yes, they’re called marines.” –Hawk
Eric vs the Gladiator. Phillip has Eric’s back. The fight goes on a whole lot longer than people thought it would and victory is not certain. More fighting. Massive casualties.
Arryl rips off a man’s arm and throws the limb at the Gladiator. Hawk throws his ax at the Gladiator, leaving himself vulnerable even if it will come back. Given the odds, O’Donovan summons the spirits (causing Arc of the Commodore jokes). Madeline and Forrester share a romantic, we’re about to die scene.
Suddenly it’s below freezing, which helps all the bleeding people. Spirits going through people. When people begin regaining consciousness, there is frost everywhere.
Most of the good guys near death. Most of the bad guys dead. Julian and Eric are barely standing.
“Weir medicine is all about the tongue.” –Leslie/Arryl
In the End
The Gladiator is dead, on the street it’s more like “some Baron got whacked.”
Eric swears public oath to defend Amber and becomes Regent. (* This event has not strictly been placed in time yet. We know it will happen post Gladiator-death and pre Duchess-divorce, but there may be other defining 'time' events in between.)
I missed the cause, but…
The Duchess is in that “I’m 20 again and someone needs to die mode. It’s lovely.”
[It was momentary, and it's all Patrice's fault. Juliana quickly remembered why just killing the people causing you grief is bad. Will fill in some gaps when there's time - Liz]
“There’s this Crime Lord, you see…” Patrice is going to marry 1000 year old man, for a price: Eric has the Duke of Karm in his corner, but he has to divorce Phillip from Julianna. “for the good of Carlisle”.
PrincessDeirdre calls Juliana up to the castle on the evening the military types are in Garnath. She tells Juliana about the deal between Karm, Carlisle, and the Crown, as if it is a done deal. When Juliana asks, somewhat incredulously, if she's supposed to be the one talking Patrice into marrying Karm, Deirdre tells her that no, that's taken care of. Juliana returns to the Carlisle Manor House in a very bad mood.
