| The Sewing Circle
| The Sewing Circle was started when Juliana first came to Amber City after the death of her first husband. The circle had humble beginnings but grew through the years as the young widow was able to make business contacts in the city, and increase HouseMerrick's income (and thus her own.) Eventually, Juliana saved enough to open a small shop for the circle, which grew to a larger shop, which she deeded over to Janet Lange on the occassion of her marriage to PhillipPinegar. This is now called Mistress Janet's Quilt Shop, and it sits at the edge of where TheMerchantQuarter meets Southside. Janet has kept the charity going during Juliana's long absence from Amber.

| A Different Drummer
| Juliana, never good with children, snapped at the bunch who always seemed underfoot when the sewing circle was meeting, to 'find something to do out of our way.' One of the more educated boys drew a false newspaper with a story about the performer who frequented the area of the shop. When Juliana realized the rest of the other children couldn't even read this simple attempt, the newspaper boys were born. While the women were sewing the boys were being taught to read, and write. Over time they started publishing a one page newssheet of events happening in TheArtDistrict they'd hawk on the streets (often blantantly harrassing the passerby into buying one) for a small 'donation.' Over the last 350 years the newssheet has grown into a small paper, filled mainly with flattering (fluff) pieces on the actors, musicians, and other performers currently in the city. A few of the boys from A Different Drummer have become scribes who can be found at the University, in local businesses, and even in the Castle. James Lange managed to keep this charity going while Juliana was out of Amber.
