As things stand
- It is once again Carnival … Oberon has not returned and it has been a year now.
- Much tension in the city and among noble houses
- Bleys and Eric are running things
- Caine and Gerard at sea trying to maintain order inGolden Circle
- Treaties are fraying because the Circle senses a power vacuum and are getting uppity.
- Sipping and trade are being disrupted. Ships vanishing attributed to sea monsters, piracy & freak storms.
- ShadowAidran is probably responsible for piracy, trying to carve out their own niche and rival Amber.
- Eric is (nominally) most in charge. Clearly there are no orders from Oberon. Eric most competent, has the most experience, even if Bleys has a better claim on the throne. With Corwin gone 200-300 years, his supports have thrown their weight behind Bleys.
- Benedict has been gone 20+ years.
- Things are tense between Rebma and Amber.
- Duels are frequent… many between Bleys and Eric supporters are simply murders thinly guised as duels.
- DCI Garret declared herself in charge of watch (her original orders came from Oberon and he can correct her when he gets back). She created an Internal Affairs w/ Wren and Hawk (neither of whom are from Amber) and back by the Weir. She is cleaning house and it’s messy.
Arryl
– Cemetery visiting (looking for) Prince Edmond’s ghost. – The Weir are on edge/jumpy. Many sense nearby predators in Arden, as well as the city, but when they go to pursue, there is nothing there. It is elusive and no hunt has found the source.
Talking to ghost: ‘if it is done, I expect I will have company.’ – Edmond “When the time comes, a good king will give himself for the land.”
Dt. Wrenn & Dr. Sabatini
– Streets of Amber – Drunken sailors are being found who cannot be woken. They have bite marks around their legs and groin that are neither human, nor canine. Orders given that sailors travel in pairs or larger groups. – Much discussion re: midget vampires ensues.
Dr. Sabatini takes samples of blood back to his lab to analyze.
Evelyn
– at the University – receives reports that people are in the library after-hours… except that when the guards go to investigate, they can’t find them. Evey closes the library, as per usual, and then sits in the dark to wait for the uninvited guests. The archive seems suddenly very big, dark and creepy. Menacing. Evelyn tells it to behave itself and begins silently naming the books along a row to occupy her mind and prevent her imagination from running away with her.
3 ‘women’ appear, walking down a row of books. They didn’t come through the door. Evey challenges them, from where she sits, and when they turn, they have masks instead of faces and hiss at her. Evey decided that they aren’t welcome here (beyond the whole, “we’re closed” issue) and tells them they have to leave.
Regarding psyche and dealing with ghosts/vampires:
“I’m not embarrassing…” –B “Then you’re first ranked.” –L
When she pulls up the Wards the trio is gone without fanfare. Evey assures the Archive that everything is okay (it seems relieved) and she leaves, telling the guards that there should be no further problems. Exits.
Nicholas
– Amber City – Creating an army of cadets to handle the flood of requests for duel ‘stand ins’ because he cannot keep up with the work and doesn’t want that personally involved with so many duels.
Dr. Sabatini
– blood samples from sailors contain saliva. No known species. – They have all suffered severe blood loss. Saliva contains euphoria inducing agent, so they went happy.
More discussion about Midget Vampire Prostitutes.
Dt. Wrenn
– Southside. By the docks, looking for vampire hookers, following sailors. “Does your job offer Bennies?” –Leslie ( Because it can’t offer Hookers.) Around the city: – The cats are jumpier than the Weir, hunting invisible mice. Unnerved and spooked. Even the ones at the library are twitchy. – Bats are out in the daytime (but no, they are not wearing make-up) – There is an absence of rats, more than the usual population drop when the meat vendors arrive – Lots of crows and other such birds of ill omen … they don’t have eyes. The pits stare out blindly and while they are never seen flying, they appear on different buildings.
“Is this going to be about bird watching?” –JP “It’s all about the birds, because it’s not about the Bennies.” –GM
Arryl
– visits w/ Eric and reports conversation with Edmond. Omens .. “only have the strength we attribute to them.” –Eric No one wants to see the hero maneuvered.
“This land is beautiful, but she lies.” –Arryl to Eric Voices plant whispers that emerge centuries later.
She exits for a run to clear her head.
Evelyn
– taking a carriage to an overlook near the palace to check the ‘ward stone’ – Passive scan: has the ward deteriorated further? Is something (outside power) currently acting against it?
Arryl
– out for a run, hears a scream and recognizes Evey by scent. – Pulls open the carriage door before the (previously napping) driver can get out of his seat, and cannot wake Evelyn. No sign of injury. Power shock? – She takes Evey to the castle infirmary, pays the driver and quietly dismisses him. – Sends a message for Ambrose .. which goes to Com. O’Donovan.
“Let me sum things up for Sol – Things have gone to shit.” –GM. After all, it’s Carnival.
Evelyn
– scan: the hole is deeper, if not wider, and is not healing, which is bad. The land is buggered. No, nothing is active against it, but there is something (arcane) building in town, an overlay of magic, set up like a domino affect. The spell is very complex and she does not have time to catch it all before she blacks out.
O'Donovan
– arrives in answer to Arryl’s request. Arryl has him check to make sure Evey isn’t still ‘plugged in’ to something before he does anything. Scry reveals that there is no active power (no current).
“Is she still attached to her body?” Arryl. Smart wolf.
Evelyn – can see stars… can almost hear them singing. She is in a cavern with no roof… – She knows there should be a palace and a mountain, and both are missing. Instead, she is standing in front of the ‘ward stone’. It glitters all blue and pretty and scary with blotchy black spots way out in the lines.
“Do you notice the disconnect?” –Sol “We’re with her body… but she’s awake…”
– Between Evey and the exit is a purple Griffin. It is taking a nap and either isn’t aware of her, or chooses to ignore her. She didn’t know they came in that color, and she hopes it doesn’t wake or change its mind.
A voice behind her causes her to turn and she is facing Prince Brand who isn’t quite sure who she is, but it doesn’t take him very long to figure it out.
“How are you here?” –Brand “That is an excellent question.” –Evey, and he agrees that it is, he doesn’t ask any other kind. “If you find the answer, please let me know.” –Evey. Brand is amused. Figures that she was doing something and that it would have been better/safer if she hadn’t.
Arryl & O'Donovan
– trying to figure out where Evey’s soul is. – It’s not in the room… and then it’s not by where the coach was.
Evelyn
–“You don’t look dead.” –Brand “I hope not.”
Evelyn is trying to stay away from the ‘deep frier’ and its trying to draw her in (gravity like). She asks if he might have suggestion to help her stay away from the Pattern. He’s not sure she’s going to be able to do so for very much longer. She turns to walk away from it, toward griffin, he steps occasionally to stay beside her.
===Arryl & O'Donovan=== – back at the overlook where coach was, trying to encourage her spirit to return.
Evelyn
– More talking with Brand and she asks point blank if he can help. Yes, but he’d have to leave her. He asks her exactly where she was, detailed questions like he is painting a picture. Kisses her hand – he can touch her even though she’s disembodied, and he vanishes. The Pattern almost sucks her in, indicating that he might have been holding her away from it the entire time. She has to fight to stay away now.
Arryl & O'Donovan
– trying to call Evey back…. – O’Donovan has drawn ward circle (Arryl is standing way back) and has provision to make sure nothing else shows up to take residence in Evey’s body. – Brand appears, though they both know he didn’t walk up.
“Do you know what’s going on?” –O’Donovan “Oh yes.” “Is it possible you could explain this to us?” “Probably not.” –Brand
Brand gives directions, has O’Donovan move around, move Evey, etc and then tells him that none of it would have done any good and asks to have Evey’s body. He vanishes.
Arryl bolts to Eric.
Day 1 of Carnival
– Evey misses work for probably the first time ever.
Day 2 of Carnival
– Anniversary of the explosion at Wesley’s pub.
Evelyn
– wakes up ... in her own room … in her nightgown…. This is cause for some concern. Meets cook/housekeeper in the hall: her parents found her sleeping on the couch and she’s been asleep a day. Her parents inform her that she has been working too hard if she can’t even make it up to her room and Evey agrees to stay home a day.
In the mail is a letter from Brand: “Thank you for an interesting, intellectually thought provoking, evening.” And expresses interest in meeting with her again at a place of her choosing.
“I’ll be in the carnival shelter in the basement.” – Stormy, when he arrives and hears the status of things.
Night of Day 2
Arryl prowling. Wrenn & Hawk working. O’Donovan & Julianna at her house drinking. Evey watching the madness go by from a seat at a sidewalk café along the University boulevard. Max is ‘working’ co-opting other crime lord’s assets. Doc is out and about.
The lights go out in Amber…. This causes some panic since, those who have read about it or where alive for it, know this same sort of event preceded the Moonrider’s last assault.
It is a ‘snuff’ affect and candles, lamps, etc are difficult to relight. Around the university, the students think its funny and party harder. Evey dashes for the library/university.
And then the music starts. It is some relief: the Moonriders didn’t do this… The music is unearthly piping with no discernable source. Then the rats begin their attack. Big rats.
– Evey holes up at University – shores up wards, refuses to let the rats enter the buildings. Lights are on like a beacon and the doors are unlocked so people can seek shelter in the atrium/main plaza. – The weir attack… feeding frenzy? And back up is howled for, and arrives from the Palace. – Wrenn and Hawk try to protect people, smashing the hell out of rats with axes. – O’Donovan and Julian leave the safety of Carlislehouse to try and save Southside residents. – Dr. Sabatini .. on way to Palace, also fights – Julian shows up on Morgenstern, who seems to enjoy stomping on rats.
The music abruptly stops. Rats scatter the way rats should.
