Homes in Amber
The Carlisle Estate
(Casting: Castletown, County Kildare, Ireland)
The estate is located approximately six hours from Amber City on a fast horse. The mansion has a beautiful entrance hall, and three parlors. The rest of the mansion is designated to house the large group of relatives who reside there most of the year.
The Carlisle Manor House
(Casting: Casa de Pergola, Cascais, Portugal)
The manor is located in the West Hills section of Amber City. It is a large home with a fountain and walled garden out back. The Duke and Duchess keep four guestrooms available, and all of these, along with the master suite, are on the upper level. The ground floor consists of parlors, two libraries, the Duke's study, the kitchens, and a very large dining hall connected to a smaller space they refer to as 'the ballroom.'
The Carlisle East Plantation
(Casting: Ashburn Plantation, Georgia, USA)
The plantation is located on the far side of the Duchy. Currently Paulus Pinegar and his family reside there, where he helps make sure the business from afar is not forgotten, and the family stays aware of the state of the entire Duchy. The plantation was owned by the 4th Duke's father-in-law, who left it to his daughter when he died, being so proud of her. She gave the land to the House, knowing her children and theirs would appreciate having a place to stay on the other side of the Duchy.
TheFairyCottage
(Casting: Rutter Creek Cottage, Oregon, USA)
The Fairy Cottage is not legally an asset of the House, but for practical purposes it is being used by the House. Vanessa Pinegar owns the cottage, having inherited it from an aunt. House Adams tradition says the cottage should pass from aunt to niece, and Vanessa has it in her will that the deed will go to Katie Henyon. The cottage is on the outskirts of the Forest Arden, and it is indeed suspected that pixies inhabit the area, although no one has yet caught one. Juliana and Phillip honeymooned there.
The Carlisle Country House
(Casting: Ennys Manor, Cornwall, UK)
This good sized house in the country was part of the dowry of the 2nd Duke's wife, Charlene. Located in an area known for its excellent hunting, the Country House can accomodate a party of 10 with servants, although the House is kept unmanned. The natural springs in the north corner of the property are referred to as 'Charlene's Tears' and are rumored to have healing properties. This is the only Carlisle holding said to be haunted.
Land Owned by the House
The Dutchy of Carlisle
The Dutchy is rather large. While the House legally owns the lands in the Dutchy, they more practically belong to those who live and work on them. A good chunk of the Dutchy is administered by the House of Bayle, whose Barony is within.
The Carlisle Wood in the Shadow of Souzan
A grant Juliana raised while serving as the King's Ambassador to the Republic of Souzan, for the preservation of woodland, administered on a fifty year renewable grant to the Parliment of Souzan.
3000 Acres in Gaiga
Although this land now legally is deeded to Juliana, her will stipulates the deed will pass to House Carlisle. The land, which begins a mile wide at the beachfront and proceeds landward in a roughly oval shape, was a gift to the Duchess from the King of Gaiga.
Homes in Shadow
Sanctuary South
Sanctuary South is a small manor in Gaiga, in the capital. The Duke had it built as a gift for his wife.
The Townhouse in Souzan
This townhouse was purchased by the Duke with the intent of having a place to stay on the frequent visits his wife intended to make to see her friends in Souzan. An opportunity to visit has not arisen yet, and the townhouse is currently being rented out.
The Townhouse in Begma
The Duke bought this property when an opportunity presented itself. It is in a prime location in the resort town of LaSalle, and brings the House excellent income as a rental property.
The Townhouse in Bayer
The Shadow Bayer has the highest technology level of any place Phillip served while an Ambassador. He found the place and its machines facinating. He bought this property to have a place to stay should he ever find time to return and research the shadow further. In the meantime the property is paying for itself by being lent out.
The Beach House, in Gaiga
(Casting: Marsh Harbor, Abaco, Bahamas)
Another rental property, this beachhouse was owned by the family long before Phillip became an Ambassador to Gaiga. Juliana and Phillip stayed there often during their years in Gaiga, often entertaining.
Business Interests
House Carlisle is in no way a specialist, unlike most of the other great houses of Amber, unless it is in being lucky. Carlisle engages in a good deal of speculative investment, with just enough grounded resources to keep the House together should all other investments fail. The House has known some rocky times, and has had to start over from scratch more than once. Many of Carlisle's investments are now situated in shadow, a result of Phillip's quarter century as Ambassador for the realm. Anyone trying to track Carlisle's fund sources would have a difficult time, as some of them are well hidden. (Carlisles are known to be gamblers who keep their cards covered.) Phillip has interests in Gaiga, Begma, Souzan, Bayer, and Kashfa. Among these are a factory mass-producing books in Bayer, as well as a publishing house there. Juliana owns A Different Drummer, profits re-invested, as well as a small horse-farm in Begma. Patrice owns a confectionary plant in Rivendell, and hands out many speculative loans to artists. She also owns an art gallery in the city of Amber. Pauline now works on behalf of the House of Kurz, but as a young woman spent most of her time traveling from village to village in the Dutchy, learning how they accomplished their industry or agriculture, and helping design more efficient processes. Paulus has interests in Begma and Diega, as well as supporting a ranch owned by his wife's parents. Vanessa, the Dowager Duchess is rumored to have stashed away a fortune in jewels. It is also rumored Vanessa gets a kick-back from the crown for every skilled guardsman she sends from the Carlisle homeguard into the crown's service. It is whispered some of these men become spies for the crown.
