b. 2344; Rockwell's first posting was the USS Tuscarora (Miranda Class) for his cadet cruise. During this time (2367) the Tuscarora was attacked by a pair of D'valel class light warbirds. The command staff was incapacitated and Rockwell (using his native tactical skills) outmaneuvered the Romulans, saving the ship and crew. He was awarded the Cadet Valor Award for his actions.

After his cadet cruise, Rockwell was assigned to the USS Hornet (Renaissance-class). The Hornet served on the bblockade line during the Klingon civil war, then patrolled the Cardassian border, as well as other missions. He helped evacuate colonists from Lutali IV during a Cardassian raid and was given the Federation Medal of Distinction.
